After our recent session and discussion on Cartier Bresson, our teacher asked us to go away and document our own event. This could be anything as small as a phone call to as big as a live music event etc. He wanted us to bring back 4 pictures which tells a story of an event in our own view of it. At first i was really unsure of what to take, I initially wanted it to be interesting and unique and so was initially thinking of going to Churchill shopping centre and taking up in some street photography. My next thought was to whether to take pictures of my friends shopping or whether to take pictures of strangers. While taking pictures of friends shopping would be easier, i thought that the images would become too staged.
I had a change of thought and then decided I wanted a more intimate setting for my event. I decided finally to keep it at my house, with my friends. I told them to go about their evening and that i would choose moments throughout the night to take pictures. I found a moment of my friends sitting at the table, chatting and laughing and thought this would be a lovely natural event to take images of.
My event is showing my friends laughing together, while one sips and drinks wine as well as taking a toke of her vape and blowing the smoke out and then laughing from a joke after. When looking back first at the images, I was initially disappointed as they didn't come out in the highest quality- this was because I was waiting for the right frames to capture and so felt a tiny bit rushed at times. This was also due to being indoors and so the shutter speed was at a longer setting in order for the aperture to allow in the light. However, after taking 24 hours and then coming back to the images, I looked at them a lot happier, and liked how it was very natural and care free. I liked how the images were frames so both subjects were slightly in and out of frame and focus. The smoke in image 3 particularly captured my attention as its ominous element made myself a lot attracted to the composition.
When comparing this image in class, my classmates said that they liked how it these images didn't look staged and showed a natural event between two friends laughing and talking. One classmates specifically said that images 3 and 4 linked to Cartier Bresson's idea of a decisive moment as they were captured at interesting times, like a puff of smoke or an innocent laugh.
Overall, looking back at the images, I like how they turned out, but if I were to complete this task again I would do it outside so the quality of the images could be better. If i'm honest i probably wouldn't choose to complete this task again as I prefer to control the direction of how I want images to look. I am more inclined to take staged images as I can choose and direct what message I am trying to portray to my audience.
