Week 3 Practical

For this task we were provided with the flash heads and asked to use it to frame our subject.

  • Our first image was to be without flash
  • Our second image was to be facing the flash head straight on
  • Our third image was to be turning the flash head to bounce it off something else.

I found this task a bit complicated as i found it hard where to place the flash gun to bounce it in a direction that could frame the subject well. As well as this, i had a problem with my camera which caused me to accidentally delete my images. However, using my partners i have included 2 images below that show me carrying out 2 of the three tasks.

This image above, was the image taken without a flash. As you can obviously see, the composition is slightly under exposed, due to being indoors. The shadows overwhelm the image and restrict my facial features from showing off. Due to having a longer shutter speed, the image has recorded movement. This stops the image having crisp lines and being sharpened to its best quality. It is clear that this image is not of its best quality due to the lighting and this is what our teacher was trying to get us to understand.

This image above was used with the flash head pointing straight on. This is successful as it has cleared the image of shadows in the background and has brought out many hidden colours and tones that were missing from the first image. The flash has contoured my face by allowing the shadows to sit modestly. The lighting has allowed my face and hair to show a brighter tone contrasting the darker, lack luster image previously mentioned. I am surprised, as usually in my experience of using flash, it has made the image look quite artificial and staged. However, in this instance it has given the image more of a natural and soft quality.

I think for my final images i am more likely to rely on natural light as i like the realistic tones that it brings. However, i will continue to experiment with using flash to enable situations when i may be taking images indoors or in a darker environment.
