Due to being ill for this weeks session, i was not able to make it to the practical. However, I still wanted to complete some work for the landscape themed week and completed the takeaway task which asked to produce 3 images from my street, looking for less obvious aspects of the environment, and parts that may be ignored or overlooked. Using my phone again as i had no access to camera, I went out onto my home street in Surrey. From the first image below, I wanted to show what it would look like from a standard viewpoint. From my knowledge, Surrey is stereotypically known as a middle class, well established area. So when taking images, I wanted to move away from the well built, middle class element and take images of parts which you would not look for when walking down the street.
From the the images below it is clear that I was really interested in the textures outside that nature offered. While you would initially walk past and regard it as dirty or worn and tired, I found a beauty in the neglected and used. The colour in Image 2 was striking and even though it was mold growing from the ground, the texture was striking and i think the camera caught the sharpness of plants growing and dispersing on the floor. In image 3 I looked at the bottom of a houses wall and found that the paint was starting to flake and chip away. Again the texture in this was captivating and I enjoyed focusing on all the chips and grazes that the bricks had endured over the time. In image 1, i particularly was interested in the mold growing on the fence and wanted to compliment it by using the perspective and lines to show the mold continuously growing throughout the fence.
I liked going against the idea of promotional photographs which are depicted as young, whole and symmetrical. I am happy that i created images of objects which people would regard as old and tattered, and focusing on their textures to create an interesting view which attracts an audiences attention to the sharpness and depth of the textures present. According to this weeks reading, we are educated not to notice wastelands in search of the real landscape and i think my images contrasted this view by focusing on the neglected land.
Even though this composition is completely different to the ideas i currently have for my final project. I think that the meaning behind the images have a subtle link to my final idea. My images will hide their neglected selves in favour for the 'real beauty', much like the 'real landscape' in John Taylor's reading.
