Week 4: Elements of a photograph task

After our workshop, we were told to go back and take images reflecting on Bate's four elements of a photograph. I did not have a camera to hand so i used my phone (a camera will be used for finals to ensure better quality).
When looking at the image is it clear that we can reflect on the four elements:(Face/Pose/Clothing/Location)

Face:
When looking at the face, the expression is crucial and can have a considerable impact on how it signifies meaning. The model in the image below shows a blank expression, this could connote a specific attitude such as being moody, however when you look closely, you can see a slight smile of the mouth which could suggest a cockiness or favours the way he looks.

Pose:
Bates explains that a pose can express a cultural identity and the significance of character. Although the subject has a blank expression, unlike a passport photograph, we can still capture emotion and psychological attitude in the image. With his arms folded, this can suggest that he is more likely to keep himself to himself and does not immediately come across as approachable. However, when comparing this with his slight smile, his manner shows a slight friendly attitude that makes you wonder whether the character is an act.

Clothing:
According to Bates, ones clothing can expose the subjects social identity. In this case, the subject is wearing tracksuits with his hood up. Initially this could suggest that the subject is from a working class background. Although, if you look at the print on the trousers, it mentions the brand Nike. This  could also connote that he could be of a higher class identity, due to wearing popular brands.

Location:
The location plays a lot to the context of the image. The subject is placed in what looks like a back garden extension to the house, which is slightly worn. This could complement his pose and location to suggest where he comes from and why he is suggested to be unapproachable.
